First Nature Farms: Eggs |
About the EggsHow do they become certified organic? |
| To produce a certified organic egg, the chicken which lays the egg must be certified organic itself or if from a conventional source, must be fed organic feed for six months before the eggs are certifiable. Some of the regulations which apply to organic egg production are as follows: |
FOODAll the ingredients used to feed the laying hen must be from certified organic sources. No herbicides, fungicides, insecticides or chemical fertilizers are allowed. The farmer must replenish the soil naturally with the goal of sustainable production. SPACE Housing must allow for "reasonable liberty, normal socialization, maximum fresh air, daylight and shelter from inclement weather conditions". The birds must have access to free range or large open air runs and have contact with the natural ground. |
HEALTHNo antibiotics, prohibited parasiticides or coccidiostatics are allowed in the egg producing flock. In the event of treatment, birds must be withdrawn from organic production for a period of 90 days or twice the official waiting period, whichever is greater. CERTIFICATE Only after the producer has met all the production regulations and had his birds, his land and his books inspected can the farm be recommended for organic status. Once approved, a certificate will issued stating that the eggs are certified organic. |
About the OperationAt First Nature Farms our egg layers have free roam of the farm. There are no cages to keep the birds contained. Hens are fed a rich diet of certified organic wheat, peas, canola, oats, rye, soya, flax, sunflower, borage, comfrey and kelp. Our chickens are pastured. Once past the chick stage they live outside on the real earth. The certified organic pasture offers them a wide variety of legumes, grasses and native plants not to mention the grubs and grasshoppers. Our chickens are naturally healthy and have never required medicating. |
Partners in EggsMarina Buchan (Four Creeks Ranch) has been an organic advocate for many years.Among her numerous roles (including organic inspector and buffalo farmer) Marina and family also graze organic laying hens on their Silver Valley farm. Their eggs are of exceptional quality! First Nature Farms is proud to help distribute the certified organic eggs from Four Creeks Ranch, especially when our own stock runs dry. Our chickens are naturally healthy and have never required medicating. |
