First Nature Farms: Chickens |
About the ChickensWhat makes a chicken certified organic? |
The FOOD
From day one and all through their lives, every
mouthful of food our chickens eat is certified
organic. That's the rule! All grains and seeds
we use for our chicken feed must be grown on
land that has achieved the status of certified
organic. This means no herbicides,
insecticides, fungicides or chemical fertilizers
can be used. The farmer must replenish the soil
naturally with the goal of improving the land for
sustainable production.
At First Nature Farms our chickens eat a balanced diet of wheat, peas, canola, soya, flax, sesame, sunflower and borage - all grown by certified organic farmers! Our chickens are also pastured. Once past the chick stage they live outside on the real earth. The certified organic pasture offers them a wide variety of legumes, grasses and native plants, not to mention the grubs and grasshoppers. The birds have the freedom to pick and choose. |
The LIFE
Organic regulations state that chicken housing
must allow reasonable "liberty, normal
socialization, maximum fresh air, daylight and
shelter".
Our birds are raised outside during the warm summer months in specially designed mobile pens. To ensure the pickings are fresh, the pens are moved at least once a day to new ground. A stressless time for the birds, they simply walk into their new pasture of grubs and greens. |
The HEALTH
Medications? Antibiotics? Hormones? Insecticides? NEVER! Regulations for certified organic production have a zero tolerance for any such products at any time in the animals life! First Nature Farm's chickens eat only wholesome organic food, breathe fresh air and enjoy a free, open range. Parasites and disease have never been a problem. Our chickens are naturally healthy! |
The CERTIFICATEOrganic certification exists to protect the consumer. The claim to be organic is not ours alone. We follow all the regulations set out by COABC (Certified Organic Associations of British Columbia) and are certified by PROPA (Peace River Organic Producers Association). Products certified by PROPA must not only pass their stringent standards but also a minimum of one farm inspection per year. |
